How can a single scent transport us across decades?

Curated as part of the Heartseedling project “The Tomato House” exhibition is an initiative born from passionate food grower Victoria (Vix) Marsland, for whom the act of nurturing a seed has always been so much more than mere cultivation; it's an exploration of self, heritage and connection. Her own growing journey instigated by a sensory memory – travelling back decades to a warm September day, air thick with the strong fragrance of tomato plants. "The scent of tomatoes is an instant time machine. I can feel the warmth on my face, the unmistakeable scent”. Vix shares “It’s a smell that doesn't just remind me of my grandfather's greenhouse in the 1980s; it transports me there in a heartbeat. A visceral reminder of how deeply entwined our senses are with our past, and how something as simple as a tomato can hold so much personal history and emotion." Step into “The Tomato House”, an exhibition brimming with real tomato plants designed to evoke this unique aroma, echoing childhood memories. Explore "Heirloom Stories” - personal written and audio narratives of people’s growing journeys, revealing lives deeply entwined with the soil. Engage with co-created and tactile tomato art that vividly showcase our collective connection to cultivation and communal endeavour. Wander through a room of sensory elements you can see, hear, touch, smell, taste, and feel to discover the inherent link between nature, community and a resilient future. We invite you to put your hands in the soil and join us in exploring these vital connections. A Sensory Journey at The Tomato House Exhibition: 6th-7th September, The Patch, High Wycombe
