Turning knitting patterns into a thriving business

“Once you're consistent with it, you don't overthink it as much.”

Sam designs and sells knitting patterns, growing a business and a community of knitters (600 and counting) around her work.

Momentum is building for MA Creative Practice student @Sam Hill , whose knitting patterns are finding an ever-growing audience. What started as a creative endeavour is becoming a thriving business, with pattern sales increasing, new opportunities arriving, and a community of knitters growing around her work.

Finding Her Audience

One of the biggest milestones for Sam has been seeing people buy her patterns.

"Definitely the sales of my patterns," she says. "It's quite exciting."

As she's continued sharing her work, her audience has grown alongside it.

"The more that I put out there, the more followers I get, and my community is up to 600 and something now."

Watching people discover her designs has been a genuine surprise.

"I didn't think I'd sold anything at this point, so yeah, that's really exciting."

Exciting Opportunities Ahead

The next few months promise to be some of Sam's busiest yet.

She has accepted an invitation to teach as part of the Hobby School online summit in September, introducing her work to knitters from across the world.

She's also been accepted to exhibit at Yarndale, one of the UK's best-loved yarn festivals, where she'll be showcasing her knitting patterns and prints.

For someone who has been steadily building an online community, it's an exciting chance to meet fellow makers face to face and share her work with even more people.

Taking Action Through Consistency

When asked what has helped her move from overthinking to taking action, Sam points to the support she's found through the Make Happen community.

"Definitely the accountability from this course," she says. "Having that support from the other students, and from you and Autumn, has really helped."

She also credits the extra sessions she's taken part in with helping her stay focused and keep moving.

Above all, she's discovered the power of consistency.

"Once you're consistent with it, you don't overthink it as much."
