Painting book covers and songs onto canvas

Jenny is building her reach as a visual artist through monthly commissions, including book cover illustrations and abstract landscape paintings inspired by her favourite songs.

Midway through the MA in Creative Practice, @Jenny B. Harrison is building her reach as a visual artist and collaborator through a steady rhythm of monthly commissions.

At the moment, much of that work is circling around books. Jenny is hand-drawing a cover illustration for @Éuni Carr’s novel Martyred, while one of her paintings, Venture, has been used as the cover for @Michelle Gordon’s latest haiku compilation, to haiku. She is also preparing new abstract landscape paintings inspired by some of her favourite songs, with the latest piece responding to Hole in the Sky by Black Sabbath.

Across all of this, Jenny’s practice is finding its place between image, sound, story and collaboration.

Sound and Vision

One of Jenny’s boldest recent moves was reaching out to Rough Trade Bristol with an exhibition idea.

She wanted to create a show of paintings inspired by epic music, and decided to ask whether the venue could help make it happen. It could easily have been one of those ideas that stayed in the notebook, waiting for the “right” time. Instead, Jenny made the request.

To her surprise, the timing was perfect. Rough Trade Bristol were keen, and the idea is now becoming a real exhibition. The show, called Sound and Vision, will run from 27th October to 1st November.

Finding the Words

Recently, Jenny has noticed a shift in how she talks about her work.

When she goes to music and art events, she feels more confident explaining what she does to people she has not met before. That matters, because her work sits in a space where conversation can lead to connection. A short chat about her practice might become a commission, a collaboration, or the beginning of a new creative relationship.

She is learning how to speak about her art in a way that feels clear and natural, while reaching the people most likely to connect with it.

Making the Ask

A big part of Jenny’s recent progress has come from remembering something simple: if you do not make requests, nothing will happen.

That mindset has helped her move from thinking about opportunities to actively creating them. Asking Rough Trade Bristol about the exhibition is a perfect example. It was direct, practical, and it opened a door.

It is also shaping how she thinks about the next stage of her practice. Jenny is not waiting to be discovered. She is making work, starting conversations, and putting herself in the places where the right people might find her.

What Comes Next

In the coming months, Jenny will be preparing for Sound and Vision at Rough Trade Bristol, while continuing to make at least one commission each month.

She also wants to find a mentor who can support her goals and keep live sketching at music events, building more relationships with possible collaborators along the way.

The focus is on keeping the momentum going, one piece of work and one conversation at a time.

Find Out More

People can support Jenny by following her work online, visiting her website, or getting in touch about commissions.

She is especially interested in hearing from people who need visual assets for creative projects, including album covers, gig posters, book covers and logo design, and who would like to work with an analogue artist to make something unique.
