Building a World Around Creativity

@Emma Newton is creating The Painted Chapter, a fantasy-themed bookshop café and art studio designed to feel inclusive, sensory-aware, and community-centred.

Rooted in storytelling and creativity, the project is still in its early stages, but it’s already beginning to take shape through branding experiments, artwork, stickers, prints, and the growing online presence surrounding it.

At the centre of the idea is a desire to create somewhere people feel safe to imagine, make things, and belong.

Pressing Publish

One of Emma’s biggest recent “Make Happen” moments was building and launching the first version of the project’s website.

Even though the idea is still evolving, she realised she needed to stop waiting for everything to feel finished before sharing it publicly.

“Pressing publish on something that’s still evolving felt like a real leap,” she says.

At the same time, she has also started creating a snail mail club, combining illustrated mail, creativity, and community in a way that feels personal and playful.

Part of that came from recognising how much she needed a creative outlet of her own outside teaching.

“As an art teacher, I’m so used to supporting other people’s creativity that I’d forgotten what it feels like to prioritise my own,” she says.

Creativity Gathering Momentum

As The Painted Chapter has developed, Emma says her own creativity has started gathering momentum again too.

For the first time in years, she’s creating consistently, experimenting with ideas, and allowing herself to play without overthinking every outcome. Building the fantasy-inspired world around the project has unlocked something unexpectedly energising.

“The more I create, the more ideas arrive,” she says.

That momentum is now beginning to move into the physical world too. Emma has recently had her prints, bookmarks, and stickers stocked in a shop in Norwich called Elsie Bs, and has booked two craft fairs to start getting both her art and The Painted Chapter out into the world.

What Comes Next

The next step is moving the website onto a platform that supports payments, alongside researching printing services for postcards, stickers, and future snail mail packs.

Emma is also building systems behind the scenes to keep the project sustainable as it grows, tracking costs carefully and finding ways to balance creativity with realism.

Once the first snail mail package launches, the focus will shift towards building a rhythm around it and growing a community around The Painted Chapter.

Letting Go of Perfect

Emma says the biggest thing helping her take action has been letting go of perfectionism.

“Waiting until everything was polished was stopping me from starting at all,” she says.

Accepting the messy middle, the drafts, experiments, and unfinished stages has allowed the project to move forward instead of staying trapped in planning.

The bigger purpose behind the project also keeps her grounded: creating a space where creativity feels magical, welcoming, and accessible to people who may not feel comfortable in more traditional environments.
