Embracing imperfection in vegan cooking

"I finished my cookbook in the first 4 months of the programme, something I've wanted to do for years!”

Autumn published Homemade Vegan, a cookbook and lifestyle brand (Joy) that brings people together through food and the joy of imperfection.

Autumn stood in front of the audience at the Society Café in Bath, her fingers brushing against the spine of her freshly printed cookbook, "Homemade Vegan." The room buzzed with the laughter and clinking of cups from forty strangers and friends, now connected by more than just their presence. They were connected by food, by the joy of imperfection, and by Autumn's journey from hesitant dreamer to bold creator.

"Homemade Vegan" had been five years in the making, a project repeatedly stalled by perfectionism and self-doubt. It wasn't until her transformative year in the Make Happen Masters that Autumn learned to embrace imperfection, authenticity, and decisive action. Through the Masters, she discovered there was no "right way"... only her way, shaped by iteration and community engagement.

Her journey began under the name Sage Kitchen, evolving into Sassy Sprouts, and finally flourishing into the brand Joy, which she proudly represented through her website, thejoy.space. Each transition taught her invaluable lessons in clarity and authenticity.

Autumn recalled the hours spent overcomplicating layouts, only to realize through relentless simplification that clarity, not complexity, was the hallmark of beauty. Embracing imperfection freed her to authentically capture the essence of vegan cooking. Each photograph in her cookbook was a testament to growth... many taken and retaken, imperfections embraced as markers of progress rather than flaws.

She remembered receiving the first print run, 200 hardbacks from a UK printer. Her heart initially sank at the compromise in quality, yet she quickly reframed it as a valuable lesson in acceptance. Imperfection wasn’t just inevitable; it was liberating.

Selling 99 of her cookbooks quickly taught her a new reality: success wasn’t about perfection, but authentic connection. Community wasn't merely beneficial; it was the heartbeat of Joy’s growth.

Witnessing the café filled with vibrant conversations, Autumn smiled, seeing the real-life impact of her recipes... more plant-based cooking, more shared meals, deeper connections. "Homemade Vegan" was more than a cookbook; it was a lifestyle, a community, a shared experience encapsulated within her brand Joy.

"The future," she reminded the audience, "is an illusion created from actions taken today. Here I am, imperfect, decisive, vulnerable."

The applause felt like an embrace, affirming the core principle she'd learned through the Make Happen Masters: action is substance, theory merely its shadow. Joy exemplified that audacity, not credentials, breaks barriers; that dialogue creates impact; and vulnerability is a source of strength.

Already envisioning her next project on seasonal vegan cooking and future retreats centred around food and authenticity, Autumn knew she wasn't just launching a book... she was living into the promise of the Make Happen Method: freedom to act, create, and share, with joy at its heart
